Winthrop Prof. Karol Miller

Prof. Miller is the world’s most frequently cited researcher in the area of biomechanics of the brain. Prof. Miller is a founding director of the Intelligent Systems for Medicine Laboratory, which has grown to become the largest research laboratory within the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Western Australia. Its mission is to improve clinical outcomes through development and appropriate use of technology. In 2006, Prof. Miller established a MICCAI-associated annual workshop series “Computational Biomechanics for Medicine”.

The main achievement of Prof. Miller in the area of numerical algorithm development is the Total Lagrangian Explicit Dynamics algorithm (TLED). Prof. Miller is one of the youngest and fastest promoted Professors of Mechanical Engineering in Australia. He received many awards, including Simulation Industry Association Award for his contributions to computer simulation of neurosurgery, Leverhulme Visiting Professorship (UK), Oden Senior Fellowship (USD) and JSPS Senior Fellowship (Japan). He is the Editor of Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineering and sits on Editorial Boards of ten journals, including Journal of Biomechanics and International Journal of Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering. He holds the title of Winthrop Professor of Applied Mechanics.
